[1] “More people in the USA can buy a gun and more people die by the gun than in any other country in the world.” This is what appeared in an American newspaper in December 1980 after the murder in New York of John Lennon, the British pop star. His murder shocked the Americans, of whom the huge majority are peace-loving and non-violent. However, most Americans today admit that they may possibly be mugged some time during their lives. In 1980 there were about 23,000 murders in the USA. At the root of this violence is the gun which Americans can buy and keep in their homes as easily as if it was a toy weapon.
[2] There are gun stores pretty well everywhere. And you can get a license easily. You don’t even have to say what you want it for. John Lennon’s murderer just walked into a gun store and bought a revolver — no questions having been asked. You could even buy guns by mail-order.
[3] Why are Americans so eager to own a gun? Self-defense might be one reason. Actually Americans seem to have a long history of owning guns. Their forefathers of frontiersmen had once used guns against outlaws, cattle rustlers, and the Indians. Today people want to use guns to protect them against gangsters, muggers and burglars. Another reason is that hunting is popular there.
[4] Now many Americans want a new law to control the ownership of guns, especially hand guns. But it doesn’t help. There is the National Rifle Association. There are 3 million members, and they have friends with influence in Congress. They also have strong support from the gun manufacturers.
[5] And many Americans themselves wouldn’t like to give up their guns. They think it’s their right as free men to own a gun. It was written into the Constitution in 1790.
[6] So the result is violence and murder. New York is a wonderful city, but male New Yorkers between the age of 21 and 44 are more likely to be murdered than to die of any other cause. And murders take place mainly in poor districts — in Harlem, and in parts of the Bronx, and on the West Side of Manhattan. Most of the murders are gangsters killing gangsters. Sometimes people even get mugged in the center of Manhattan, in their own flats. Maybe this is why people have chains and peep-holes on their doors, and sometimes a locked turnstile and an armed security guard downstairs. But still they do not feel safe.

[1]It gives me a great pleasure to join you for this important initiative as the UN marks its 70th anniversary.
[2]Education is very close in my heart. My father grew up in a very small village in China. In those days, not many villagers could read. So my father opened a night school to teach them how to read. With his help, many people learned to write their own names; with his help many people learned to read newspapers for the first time; with his help, many women were able to teach their children how to read. As his daughter, I know what education means to the people, especially those without it.
[3]After generations of hard work, China has come a long way in education. I myself am a beneficiary of that progress. Otherwise I would never have become a soprano and a professor of music. I am following in my father’s footsteps by teaching at China’s Conservatory of Music to help continue China’s success story.
[4]I want to thank Director-General Bokova and UNESCO for naming me the Special Envoy for Women and Girls Education. I am truly honored to work with the UN and do something about Global Education. I have visited many schools around the world. I’ve seen first-hand on how much more we can do for education.
[5]Education is about women and the girls. It is important for girls to go to school because they will become their children’s first teacher someday. But women still account for over half of the world’s poor in population and 60% of adults who can’t read. Education is crucial in addressing such inequalities. In China, Spring Buds Education Program has helped over 3 million girls go back to school. Many of them have finished university education and they are doing well at work.
[6]Education is about equality. In poor countries and regions the number of school dropouts is astonishing. We call for more educational resources to these places.
[7]Education is about the young people. Young people are the future. Education is important because it not only gives young people knowledge and skills but also helps them become responsible citizens.
[8]As the UNESCO special envoy and the mother myself, my commitment to education for all will never change. Many years ago my father made a small difference in his village. Together we can make a big difference in the world.
[9]I was once asked about my Chinese dream. I said I hope all children, especially girls, can have access to good education. This is my Chinese dream. I believe one day education first will no longer be a dream, it will be a reality enjoyed by every young woman on this planet.
[10]Thank you very much.

[1]Let’s share: cars, flats, power tools. Companies from eBay to Uber to Airbnb have discovered that tens of millions of people around the world are both eager to stop wasting underused assets – and willing to waste lots of time figuring out how to share them with strangers.
[2]Tight economic times and a growing openness to strangers thanks to the Internet have given rise to the “sharing economy.” People are logging on to sites and apps to rent out their cars, houses and even their clothes directly to one another. And it’s big business: the peer-to-peer rental market is worth $26 billion, according to Rachel Botsman, author of What’s Mine Is Yours: The Rise of Collaborative Consumption.
[3]Two big names come to mind when we talk about the sharing economy: ridesharing company Uber and lodging rental company Airbnb. The latter allows people to rent out their homes as an alternative to hotels and motels.
[4]Robert Hero, 22, biked across Europe with two friends this summer, crashing on strangers’ couches as they went. They had met these people not in train stations or coffee shops but on a website that connects travelers with hosts who have spare mattresses.
[5] Such “collaborative consumption” is a good thing for several reasons. For individuals, the sharing economy is helping to save – or even create – money and time for consumers. Owners make money from underused assets. Airbnb says hosts in San Francisco who rent out their homes do so for an average of 58 nights a year, making $9,300. Car owners who rent their vehicles to others using RelayRides make an average of $250 a month; some make more than $1,000. Renters, meanwhile, pay less than they would if they bought the item themselves, or turned to a traditional provider such as a hotel or car-hire firm. (It is not surprising that many sharing firms got going during the financial crisis.) And there are environmental benefits, too: renting a car when you need it, rather than owning one, means fewer cars are required and fewer resources must be devoted to making them.
[6]The sharing economy is a little like online shopping, which started in America 15 years ago. At first, people were worried about security. But having made a successful purchase from, say, Amazon, they felt safe buying elsewhere. Similarly, using Airbnb or a car-hire service for the first time encourages people to try other offerings.
[7]In the past, new ways of doing things online have not displaced the old ways entirely. But they have often changed them. Just as internet shopping forced Walmart and Tesco to adapt, so online sharing will shake up transport, tourism, equipment-hire and more.
[8]The main worry is regulatory uncertainty. Will room-renters be subject to hotel taxes, for example? In Amsterdam officials are using Airbnb listings to track down unlicensed hotels. In some American cities, peer-to-peer taxi services have been banned after lobbying by traditional taxi firms. The danger is that although some rules need to be updated to protect consumers from harm, incumbents will try to destroy competition. People who rent out rooms should pay tax, of course, but they should not be regulated like a Ritz-Carlton hotel.
[9]The sharing economy is the latest example of the internet’s value to consumers. This emerging model is now big and disruptive enough for regulators and companies to have woken up to it. That is a sign of its immense potential. It is time to start caring about sharing.

[1] Stephen Hawking was born on the 300th anniversary of Galileo's death. He has come to be thought of as the greatest mind in physics since Albert Einstein. He can neither move nor speak, nevertheless he is a highly regarded professor at Cambridge University in a field beyond the reach of most mortals.
[2] Hawking grew up outside London in an intellectual family. His father was a physician and specialist in tropical diseases; his mother was active in the Liberal Party. He was an awkward schoolboy, but knew from early on that he wanted to study science. He became increasingly skilled in mathematics and in 1958 he and some friends built a primitive computer that actually worked. In 1959 he won a scholarship to Oxford University, where his intellectual capabilities became more noticeable. In 1962 he got his degree with honors and went to Cambridge University to pursue a PhD in cosmology. There he became intrigued with black holes and "space-time singularities". After receiving his PhD, he stayed at Cambridge.
[3] Stephen Hawking is a phenomenon of modern era. Doctors gave him only a limited lifespan after he was diagnosed at the age of 22 with an incurable disease of the muscles and nervous system. His condition would be unendurably painful for most people, but Hawking prefers to joke about it: at least he is not subject to the temptations of wasting his time jogging or playing golf, he says.
[4] And, more seriously, he is convinced that he has found “great happiness” in his life, both personal and professional. He said discovering he had the disease had not been the great blow many thought. “Before my condition had been diagnosed, I had been very bored with life. There had not seemed to be anything worth doing,” he once remarked. “I believe I’m happier now”
[5] Hawking is not even able to adjust his glasses, nevertheless he is sometimes referred to as “master of the universe”. Jane Wilde, whom he married at the age of 25 — after his fateful diagnosis — has seen it as her main task to remind him “that he wasn’t God.”
[6] “My goal is the complete understanding of the universe, why it is the way it is and why it exists at all.” he once said. In other words, he aims to “read God’s thoughts,” although, as an atheist, he uses the term purely as a metaphor for the abstract laws of physics that are his daily companions.
